This wasn't some quaint tradition — it was pure desperation. The crouch start had been adopted by serious runners decades earlier, but the technology to support it simply didn't exist. Runners would show up to meets with pocket knives, kitchen spoons, or whatever digging implement they could find, spending precious minutes before each race excavating little footholds that would crumble the moment they exploded forward.
The whole scene was chaotic, time-consuming, and deeply unfair. Runners in later heats got to use the holes dug by earlier competitors, while those in the first heat had to break fresh ground. Meet directors were constantly delayed, and athletes were showing up with gardening equipment like they were heading to a landscaping job.
A Coach's Garage Experiment
Charlie Paddock, the 1920 Olympic champion, later described the pre-block era as "trying to launch a rocket from quicksand." But the solution came from an unlikely source: a college track coach in California who was tired of watching his athletes struggle with makeshift holes that fell apart mid-race.
George Bresnahan, coaching at the University of Iowa, spent a weekend in 1927 tinkering in his garage with pieces of scrap wood and metal brackets. His contraption was embarrassingly simple — two wooden blocks set at different angles, connected by an adjustable frame that could be positioned according to each runner's stride. The whole thing looked like something you'd use to prop open a garage door.
But when Bresnahan's sprinters tested the device, something remarkable happened. Not only did they get a more consistent start, but their times dropped significantly. The blocks provided exactly the right angle and resistance that runners had been trying to carve out of the dirt, but with perfect consistency every single time.
From Skepticism to Standard
The track and field establishment initially treated Bresnahan's invention like a gimmick. Old-school coaches argued that "real" sprinters should be able to adapt to any surface, and that artificial aids were somehow unsporting. The Amateur Athletic Union actually banned starting blocks from several major competitions, claiming they gave an unfair advantage.
But the numbers didn't lie. At meets where blocks were allowed, sprint times consistently dropped. More importantly, the starts became dramatically more fair — no longer did success depend on how quickly you could dig a decent hole or whether previous runners had left you with usable footholds.
The 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles became the turning point. Though blocks weren't officially required, several American sprinters used them and dominated the sprint events. Eddie Tolan won both the 100m and 200m using Bresnahan's blocks, and suddenly every serious sprinter wanted a pair.

Modern starting blocks are still essentially Bresnahan's garage experiment, refined with better materials but following the same fundamental principles. The blocks are set at specific angles — typically around 45 degrees for the front block and 65-75 degrees for the rear — that allow runners to generate maximum horizontal force while maintaining balance.
Those angles, which Bresnahan arrived at through trial and error in his garage, remain the subject of intense debate among coaches and sports scientists today. Some argue for steeper angles to maximize power generation, while others prefer shallower settings for quicker clearance. Elite sprinters spend hours fine-tuning their block settings, adjusting them by millimeters in search of that perfect launch angle.
The Mandatory Revolution
By 1937, starting blocks became mandatory in all sanctioned sprint events. The International Association of Athletics Federations standardized the specifications, and suddenly every track in the world needed to be equipped with block mounting systems.
The change transformed more than just sprint times — it revolutionized how races looked and felt. The garden spade era of sprinting lasted less than fifty years, but it took a college coach's weekend garage project to finally bury it for good.
